What is homicide
Louisiana law defines homicide as the killing of a human being. Homicide is a hot topic in Shreveport, and Bossier City as the number of homicides continues to rise. Shreveport alone logged approximately 74 homicides in 2020 and 91 in 2021; statistically, the 2022 number should exceed that by a significant amount. Because of the random shootings from vehicles and the trend for younger offenders to have guns, the city is attempting to impose harsher penalties as a deterrent. So far, that is not effective. The number continues to rise.
Types of homicide
In Louisiana, there are five types of homicide:
* First Degree Murder
* Second Degree Murder
* Manslaughter
* Negligent Homicide
* Vehicular Homicide
The penalties for homicide vary greatly, from the death penalty to minimal jail time, depending on the facts of the case.
Keep in mind the laws and interpretations are continually changing. The above references laws in effect as of 2022 outlined in LSA R.S. 14:29. As rulings come down from different courts and jurisdictions, these rules are apt to change.
