While I am not a cyclist, I was just asked if riding a bicycle on the sidewalks in Louisiana is legal. As a former prosecutor and now a criminal defense attorney, I’m here to tell you that it depends. Louisiana has no law prohibiting bicycle riding on sidewalks; however, some cities have ordinances banning it. For example, in Shreveport, there is a city ordinance that prohibits riding a bike on sidewalks in the business district, which is not clearly defined, and a law banning anyone under the age of 15 from riding a bicycle on any sidewalk. So, before peddling off into the sunset, do a little research. Different cities will have different laws, and it’s essential to know the laws of the different areas you are riding a bike.
