An officer has approached you asking your name; what can you do? As a former prosecutor and now a criminal defense attorney, I read the current law as it requires you to provide your name, address, and an explanation of your actions.
Remember, this requirement hinges on the officer reasonably suspecting you have committed or are about to commit a crime. To know if you are indeed being investigated, you can provide that information and no more, then ask if you are free to leave. After providing that information, stop talking.
