Move over, Rover. As of August 1, 2025, Louisiana has altered and increased penalties for driving in the left-hand lane longer than necessary to pass another vehicle. As a former prosecutor and now criminal defense attorney, I can tell you the law now requires you to move over. There was a time when driving in the left-hand lane was OK, as long as you were not under 10 MPH under the posted speed limit. Now, you are only allowed to use the left-hand lane for passing. And this driving offense carries steeper penalties than most traffic tickets. If you get three of these offenses within 12 months, you are looking at a fine of up to $350 and up to 30 days in jail. Jail time for driving in the left-hand lane.

My name is Larrion Hillman, and I’m a criminal defense attorney in Northwest Louisiana. Remember, keep calm, and move over.
