Representing Young People
18 —21
Criminal charges affect people of all ages; however, it is challenging to face a criminal charge while starting your life. I deal regularly with people aged 18 to 21. This is a pivotal age when young adults suffer from peer pressure and do things that will impact them long-term. Statistically, if you have a felony on your record at this age, you will earn less and have a lower employment level even 10 years after the conviction. We must do whatever we can to keep a felony off your record. Younger people often do not realize the long-term consequences of their actions.
When navigating the system with people in this age group, I often work with them on more than the criminal charge. They frequently do not understand life choices and consequences and how those decisions can have a long-term impact beyond what they can imagine. My job is not just to explain the long-term consequences but also to make sure they understand the impact.
There are times when avoiding the criminal penalty is not possible. In those situations, I have to advise my clients on the path to their future. The ultimate goal is to complete an education or skill and move into the best employment possible. Depending on the crime charged, rehab or life skills classes often best serve my client. Then, based on the charge and facts, we move to have the matter expunged from their record. The goal is to get through the immediate charge, prevent future incidents, and clean up their criminal record, if necessary.
Keep in mind the laws and interpretations are continually changing. As rulings come down from different courts and jurisdictions, these rules are apt to change.
